I was on the fence the whole pregnancy about vaginal delivery vs. c-section, as I had only had vaginal deliveries prior. However, with the position of baby B, we decided on c-section. With him not head down, I was not about to do a breech extraction, which would have happened if he didn’t drop into a head down position after baby A was born. I was pretty much terrified of having a c-section, even though it’s very common and women do it everyday. It was just something about being awake during a major surgery that really got to me. Plus, I had never had a major surgery before. Everything was planned for 38 weeks. My OB’s MA didn’t think it’d make it to 38 weeks… I said, “Bet me. Surrobabies don’t want to come out of me! I WILL make it to 38 weeks.”
Leading Up to Delivery
Delivery was Thursday 8Aug2024 at 0800 – exactly 38 weeks. It was extremely hot and I was 100% miserable in the heat! The Dad’s had already arrived to town. We had breakfast the morning before and then I took them to the hospital to show them where to go. Then they had their last day of peace and quiet until life did a complete 180. My husband and one dad was in the delivery room with me. I’ve given birth at St. Joe’s 3 times prior, so I was very comfortable there. My previous OB was the attending physician my last day there and he came into see me between deliveries. I was very happy to see him.
Delivery Time
My husband was watching everything happen and I kept asking him what they were doing. Surprisingly, I didn’t cry as much this time as I did after my previous deliveries. Maybe because I was so done with the little ones in my ribs and the horrible heartburn. Possibly there were less tears because I didn’t have to work as hard to get them out.
I was there 2.5 days – Thursday morning to mid-day Saturday. My husband was in and out of the hospital to go home to our son and keep an eye on me. I was so happy to be home and so cold, which was weird. I had long sleeves and pants on… In Phoenix, Arizona. In August. My son was happy to see me when I got home and so were the dogs.
The First Few Days Home
The babies were born on Thursday morning and I was making dinner on Sunday night, I felt fine. I mean, I was so scared of a c-section, but it’s been the best delivery and recovery of them all.
I’ve been with my coordinator, Ashley, for all 3 surrogacies. She’s easy to talk to, very patient and never makes you feel like you’re a bother. She is extremely knowledgeable about everything surrogacy related, and gets things done that need to be done. I say I’ll never carry twins again, but we’ll see when #4 rolls around 😉
Dear Future Surrogates,
Be patient leading up to transfer. It’s hard, so very very hard, but literally nothing is in your control. Don’t be scared of the needles. I was for 2 whole pregnancies and my husband did all my injections until this last pregnancy. I finally did a few myself, it’s not that bad, the needle is just a bit scary.
